Manokwari

The city of Manokwari became the capital of West New Guinea during the Dutch colonization. Located at the northern part of the Irian mainland, Manokwari lies on the beautifull surrounding gorges, The main interest around Manokwari includes Gunung Meja Park, from where you can view the scenery of Manokwari town, Amban beach that only 5 kilometers from town and can be reached by public transports, beatifull Anggi Lake and Arfak Reserve.

There are Garuda and Merpati flights from Jayapura to Biak everyday, then from Biak to Manokwari using Fokker F - 27, Twin Otters available in a week also you could use Pelni Lines from Jayapura - Biak - Serui - Nabire - Manokwari - Sorong for alternative tour transportasi to this area from Manokwari to Arfak Mountain / Mokwan by Trekking or coach ( Hardtop ).

The Arfak Reserve

The Arfak Reserve ( 450 square kilometers ) lies in the north - east corner of the Irian Peninsula and just 25 kilometers away from Manokwari.

The vegetation comprises lowland and hill forest has been selectively logged but it has retained much of its diversity. The reserve protects large numbers of endemic, rare and commercially important species. There are about 110 species of mammal may be found here, including thirty species of marsupial such as tree kangaroos, forest wallabies, bandicoots, possums and cus-cus.

About half of the 320 bird species recorded for the reserve are endemic to Irian Jaya, and some of them are not known outside the Arfak region. for birding this reserve is one of the heavens you may see in the island. Public transport ia available then countinue on foot to the reserve area.

The Cenderawasih Bay

Another beautifull sea garden in the northern part of Irian Jaya is the Cenderawasih Bay National Park, not far from Manokwari. to get to this park, Merpati flies once a week to Wasior using Merpati Twin Otter plane. Many tourists have tried to dive in the area and found it very interesting.

Besides sea garden, in the area you many also see many Irian Typical birds as well as varied wild orchids. Wasior islands group include Anggrameos, Auri, Mapia and Raja Ampat which is also close to Sorong.

Arrive at Rendani airport then pax with local guide, tour escort and porters by coach in two hours drive to Jembatan Prafi. Stop there then start trekking to Kali Mani camp about two hours for dinner overnight in tent or hut.

After breakfast watching the birds’ paradise. (Lesser birds of paradise, hornbirds, white cacato, parrot, pigeon etc) about 3 hours trekking then stop at desa Duaibei. From Desa Duaibei Trekking to kilo 14 about 30 minutes. Dinner overnight at kilo 14.
